This classic game combines party music with exercise and some competitive spirit. It’s lots of fun for all ages, too!
Top tip!Check with the children which version of the game they’d prefer to play. Or perhaps they’d like to make up their own!
Chairs (enough for all but one of the children playing)
About the activity
Find a large indoor space, or you could play outside with some garden furniture. Arrange the chairs in a circle so that they are facing outwards.
You’ll need one person to be in charge of starting and stopping the music.
Encourage the children to walk around the chairs as the music starts. Each time you stop the music, they have to sit on a chair as quickly as they can.
There are enough chairs for all but one of the children, so there’ll be one player left standing. The player that is left standing is out of the game.
Take one more chair away from the circle and start the music again. The game continues until there is only one player left – the winner!
Some alternative versions could include:
- Have enough chairs for everyone (or just use floor space). The last player to sit down is out of the game
- Musical hats – the last player to put a hat on is out of the game
