Let children put their green fingers to work by helping to plant a tree. They’ll have lots of fun as they gain an appreciation for nature and an understanding of the important role that trees play in our environment.

Fun fact!
Our planet is home to more than 60,000 tree species!
Equipment needed
- A young tree
- Water
- Watering can
- Spade
- One or two stakes
- Soft material to tie the tree
About the activity
Research the type of tree you’d like to grow. How much space do you have? How much (or little!) effort would you like to put into maintaining it? Would you like a flowering tree or a fruit tree? Which trees are likely to grow well in your soil? Where will it get enough light?
Be sure to involve the children in your research to help them learn about the different types of trees that grow in our gardens, and what is required to look after them.
Dig a hole big enough for the root ball to fit in. Remove the root ball from the pot and ask the children to help you water it thoroughly. Place in the hole, filling any gaps with soil, then water again.
Continue to water your tree as required – this will vary depending on the type of tree and stage of growth. The children will love to see it grown and blossom over time!
(Note that if your tree is fairly heavy, it may need to be staked – an adult will need to do this. Check the best staking method for your tree – you can use a single stake or two either side of the tree – and secure by tying your soft material around the stake and tree.)
