First, make the playing cards by cutting a large piece of card or paper into small, square, identical pieces (younger children should have adult supervision). Next, use a pen or pencil to make card pairs – in each pair, one card should feature a shape (e.g. a circle, triangle, square, pentagon, oval) and the other the name of the shape. Make as many pairs as you like – the more there are, the harder the game will be! For older kids, include more advanced shapes, too, such as a trapezium, rhombus, parallelogram, hexagon etc.
Now, it’s time to play! Shuffle the cards and deal them face down on a flat surface. Players take it in turns to turn over two cards in search of a pair. If the cards aren’t a match, the cards are turned back over and the next player has their go. If, however, a player turns over a shape together with its correct name, the player keeps the cards and goes again – it remains their turn until they fail to find a matching pair.
The player with the most cards at the end of the game wins!
