Test your child’s literacy skills with this brilliant spelling bee activity. Not only will it broaden kids’ vocabulary and improve spelling, it’s also a great confidence-builder as kids learn to practice using new words aloud. The only question is, are your spelling skills up to scratch?!

About the activity
You need one caller and at least one speller. The caller will pick the word that each speller has to spell and will use it in a sentence. For example, to spell rabbit, the caller would say: “Please spell rabbit. Julia has a fluffy pet rabbit.” The speller must then spell the word, only their first answer can be accepted.
The game continues until someone spells a word incorrectly. You could change this rule so that someone is only eliminated after three errors or you could form a point system.
Here is a list of potential words, in order of difficulty, suitable for ages 6+: bat, cat, rat, nap, tap, tag, jam, fig, ball, task, have, hump, pest, bump, hike, peep, green, gust and mine.
