Having a pen pal will help your child to develop friendships, express themselves and build an appreciation for the written word. Regularly writing letters is also a fun way for them to improve their literacy skills and hand-eye coordination. They’ll love receiving their pen pal’s reply in the post!
Fun fact!Up until June 1920, people in the USA could post their children, providing they were under 5 kilograms in weight!

About the activity
See if you can arrange a pen pal for your child/children with relatives or family friends living far away. In their letters, get them to write about different things, such as what they’ve been up to, their likes and dislikes, what they have planned, what they hope to do etc. Encourage your child to be creative with their letters and make them fun and interesting – they could include drawings, stickers, photos or even small gifts. Make sure they ask their pen pal questions about themselves, too – and include their address so their pen pal can reply!
