Water balloon chaos is great energetic exercise for kids – and it’s the perfect way to cool down on a hot summer’s day! Handling the slippery, squishy balloons helps develop their motor ability, and reaching their targets or ducking water missiles encourages stamina, attention, balance and hand-eye coordination.

Top tip!
Add a few drops of food colouring to some of the balloons for a surprise colour splash! (Just be sure to use colouring that won’t stain your child’s swim suit)
Equipment needed
- Water balloons
- Plastic basket or bucket
Optional extra equipment:
- Clothes pegs
- Food colouring
About the activity
Fill the water balloons using a garden hose, jug, funnel or water tap. You don’t want to fill them too much – make the missiles no bigger than a grapefruit. Knot the neck of each balloon. Use a whole packet of balloons and rest them in a large basket or bucket as you fill them. Take the balloon basket outside and set it on the ground in the middle of a large grassy space. Now let the balloon chaos begin! It’s fun if everyone just fights for themselves, but you can also split the players into two teams or groups of pairs. You could also add music to the mayhem, and make a rule that when the music stops everyone has to freeze! Just make sure the music system is in a safe, dry place!
