Various coins
Paper (one sheet per person)
Colouring pencils and/or felt-tip pens
Lay out the paper and pencils/pens on a flat surface, together with a pile of coins.
The more coins of different values the better. Get the kids to draw a smiley caterpillar face at one end of their sheet of paper. Encourage them to be creative and make their drawing fun and colourful!
For the body, get them to lay out different coins next to each other – they may wish to use a small bit of sticky tack to keep the coins in place. They can also draw legs and spiky hairs to make their coin creatures come to life!
Once the kids have finished, have them add up the value of the caterpillar’s coins! How expensive is their caterpillar?! If several kids are taking part in this maths activity, they could add up each other’s caterpillars, before placing the coins back in the pile and playing again!
