This activity combines both indoor play and outdoor play by working with your kids to craft their very own kite, before heading outdoors to watch it fly. This activity also encourages kids to think about the weather as they learn to spot the perfect kite-flying conditions!

Fun fact!
Did you know that kites have been around for thousands of years? Once upon a time, they were even used to send long-distance messages!
Equipment needed
- A roll of paper (kraft or coloured will do)
- Coloured ribbon
- Two gardening sticks
- Coloured marker pens
- Sticky tape
- String
- Cocktail stick
- Scissors
- Rule
Steps
1
Lay your paper out flat on a table. Then, put the gardening sticks in a cross on the paper and mark 2cm away from the end of each stick. Then, use the ruler to join up the points to make a diamond shape.
2
Use the pens to draw a design onto the kite. Then stick a length of tape over each edge of the diamond so that the line you’ve drawn is in the middle of the tape. Do the same on the other side of the paper.
3
Carefully cut out the kite and use plenty of tape to stick the gardening sticks to the back. Next, cut a length of ribbon and stick it to the bottom of the kite for the tail.
4
Carefully use the cocktail stick to pierce a hole in the front of the kite where the sticks overlap. Thread through a piece of string and tie it tightly around the cross-section. Now you’re ready to fly!
