Top tip!
Use a soft paint brush to carefully smooth the sandcastle’s edges, and a straw to blow away any unwanted sand.
Equipment needed
- Sand
- Water
- Bucket
- Spade
- Optional extras ‐ shells, sticks and pebbles for decoration, and a spoon for adding detail
About the activity
Ask the kids to fill their bucket to the top with wet sand and pat it with a spade to help it set. Then get them to tip the bucket upside down on flat base, and tap the bottom to release the sandcastle!
What type of castle would they like to turn it into? Tall and thin? Low and wide? Would they like to make a mote full of water?
Encourage the kids to add interesting details, too. Will they add turrets and flags? Will they decorate their castle with shells, pebbles and sticks?
If you’re at the beach, the kids might like to dig a damn around the sandcastle. Or if playing at home, how many sandcastles can they fit in the sand table?
