Making music with various objects and items is a great way for children to explore their creativity, practise listening and learn about materials in the world around them. It’s also a fun activity that helps improve a child’s attention span and build self-confidence.

About the activity
Take your child/children for a walk in a garden, park, along the seaside or around your local area. As you wander, get them to look out for things that might make interesting sounds – things such as dry leaves, pebbles, shells, sticks, pine cones, bark or seaweed. Encourage them to think about and experiment with the sounds that different materials make. Once they’ve collected various items, get them to arrange them in a circle, together with their tubs and tins…then it’s time to make some noise! Rustle, rattle, crunch, tap and bang…what music can they make with their silly symphony?
