Top tip!
Ask the children if they prefer to tell the ‘Fortunately’ or ‘Unfortunately’ part of the story, or a mix of the two. You may be able to arrange the game so that they get to tell their favourite parts they feel most excited about.
About the activity
Choose who is going to say the first part of the story – this can be a sentence about anything they like. For example: “Some pirates sailed their ship to an island to look for treasure”.
The second player says; “Unfortunately…” and continues the story by describing something that went wrong, such as: “… a sea monster captured the pirates”.
The next player says; “Fortunately…” and continues by describing something happy that fixes the problem. It could be: “… a tiny mouse tickled the sea monster and helped the pirates escape.”
There’ll be lots of giggles as the children make their story as silly as they can!
Carry on playing until the tale comes to a natural end or the children feel like starting a different story.
