Children can have lots of fun experimenting with the silly squeaks, toots and honks they can make with grass trumpets! Learning how to manipulate the grass is a mini cognitive puzzle that requires focus and fine motor ability. What’s more, sharing their new talent with friends will help with their language and social skills, too.

Top tip!
Choose a thick blade of grass to begin with and then try trumpeting with a mixture of sizes.
Steps
1
Pick a long, thick piece of grass that looks strong Make one hand into a soft fist, like a thumbs-up sign. Make the other hand do the same, wedging the grass between your thumbs so it is tight.
2
Smack your lips together and pucker up! Put your mouth on your thumbs, over the blade of grass, and blow. If you don’t hear a sound you might need to change how the grass is placed between your thumbs. Once you get the hang of making a trumpet noise, play around with your thumb position and see how the sound changes!
