Fun fact!
Humans are made of stardust! Nearly all the elements in the human body were formed in stars that exploded a long time ago.
About the activity
Stargazing can be done on your doorstep, but it can be even better if you go with your family to a dark, quiet, safe place away from light pollution.
On a clear night, prepare some hot chocolate and snacks. Wrap up warm and grab a few blankets or sleeping bags if you have them.
Get snug, lie on your back and look up at the cosmic carpet above you. Encourage kids to look at the moon. Does it remind them of anything? Can they can spot the brightest star? How old do they think it is? Ask them to pick their favourite star and make a wish!
Older children will enjoy searching for constellations (star charts are easy to find online and take with you), but children of all ages will love to keep a star diary and record what they see. If you’re lucky, you might see a shooting star blaze across the sky!
