About the activity
In this activity, kids move around areas pretending that the floor is made of lava. The aim of the game? Don’t fall in! If a player does step on the ground (into the lava), they have to wait for another player to rescue them.
Ask the kids to choose which areas keep them ‘safe’ from the lava floor. If playing indoors, they might choose some cushions, a rug and blankets. Or if playing outdoors, they might choose a pathway, steppingstones or play equipment.
Encourage the children to use their imagination and think up lots of detail as they play. Are they standing on islands? Where is the lava coming from? Is the lava moving quickly? What kinds of things can they see? Is there a lava monster, maybe…?!
